This is the cheats version of the yummy croissant/doughnut hybrid! If you don’t have time to make your own puff pastry then the frozen sheets will get these cronuts ready in less than half an hour! If you do have the time to make your own pastry – definitely do! Nothing will compare to fresh pastry in my eyes/mouth. But seriously, these were just so easy and scrummy, it will make you wonder why you don’t cheat more often :D!
Makes 4 Cronuts
You will need:
- 3 sheets of frozen puff pastry (my sheets were 10×10 in)
- Softened butter (just a little for spreading between the sheets)
- 4tbs white sugar
- 4tbs ground cinnamon
- 3 cups of canola oil for frying
First preheat your oven to 200C.
When your pastry is defrosted and ready to work with, brush some softened butter over each of them. Next sprinkle some ground cinnamon on top of each sheet.
Then lay each sheet directly on top of the other. Cut straight down the middle and fold the halves on top of each other. The fold in half again so that the dough is now a big thick stack of layers.
Roll the pastry out with a rolling pin so that it doubles in size, giving you enough surface area to cut the 4 cronuts. Using a pastry cutter (about 4in wide) cut 4 even circles. Use a smaller one about 1in to cut out the holes. If you don’t have one that size a shot glass works well!
Get a baking tray ready and mix the sugar with the cinnamon on the surface.
In a medium sized saucepan heat up the canola oil on a high heat. Test the oil is ready by dropping one of the cronut holes in. When it’s ready it should bubble up all around the sides. Fry the cronuts one by one until golden brown. They should puff up nicely in the oil. Place the cronuts on the baking tray straight from the oil and cover them with the cinnamon sugar (add more sugar if you need to).
Pop the fried cronuts in the oven for about 10 – 15 minutes to make sure all the pastry in the middle is cooked through. This should also make them rise even more, giving you a nice fluffy cronut :D!
Enjoy with some vanilla ice cream or some jam… or if your feeling as guilty as I was by this point and don’t want to add anything, just on their own is divine!
